Rail Operations

Rail Operations mechanical volunteers keep up both our operational and display rail equipment.  Here, volunteers are preparing Seaboard Air Line Russian decapod No. 544 for a new coat of paint.  SAL 544 is one of several non-operational steam locomotives on display inside the Bob Julian Roundhouse.  It was built by the American Locomotive Company in March 1918, originally for the Russian State Railroad.  It was never delivered to Russia due to the Revolution of 1917, and became the property of the United States Railroad Administration.  It operated on the Seaboard Air Line out of Hamlet and Raleigh, NC, and was eventually transferred to the Gainesville Midland, an SAL subsidiary in Georgia.

Many varying skills are needed to keep our rail equipment either running or in its best display appearance.  If you would like to become a volunteer in our Rail Operations mechanical department, send us an email at railops@nctransportationmuseum.org.
