Wake County officials said they will hire hundreds of temporary workers in July to help with its COVID-19 response.
The 235 available jobs will mostly focus on public health such as contact tracing, epidemiology and nursing, Wake County said in a news release on June 23, adding that the remaining available temporary positions will help with general efforts to combat the coronavirus.
“We are now on day 112 of running our Emergency Operations Center — the longest response in Wake County’s history — and it’s not going to end any time soon,” County Manager David Ellis said in the news release. “As we look at how we can start reopening our facilities and begin providing services to our residents again, we must temporarily expand our workforce, so we can continue leading the fight against COVID-19 in a sustainable way.”
To pay for the salaries and benefits, the county said it will use CARESAct funding. The hiring process started in July and the temporary positions will last until at least Nov. 30.
“Having a dedicated staff to support our response efforts will allow us to continue to share the latest information seamlessly, quickly and efficiently with an end goal of protecting the health of our community," Public Health Division Director Chris Kippes said in the release.
