Four athletes and a volunteer from North Carolina were recognized by Governor Josh Stein on April 15 for their participation in the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Italy in March. The event, which took place at the Executive Mansion in Raleigh, was organized by the Sir Walter Cabinet.

Trenton D’Agostino, Stephen Foster, and Ashley Tanner received the prestigious Laurel Wreath Award, which is given to those who have made significant contributions to sports in North Carolina. D'Agostino, Foster, and Tanner earned their awards for their performances in snowboarding, Alpine skiing, and figure skating, respectively. All three athletes received medals at the Games.

The Special Olympics World Games occur biennially, alternating between summer and winter events. The World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, involved more than 1,500 athletes from 102 delegations, with an audience of over 500,000 spectators and the assistance of 20,000 volunteers.

Dustin Edmondson and Lt. Ken Klos-Weller were also honored with certificates of recognition for their involvement in the World Winter Games Torch Run. The Torch Run, featuring law enforcement officers from around the globe, involves carrying the Flame of Hope to raise awareness for the Special Olympics.

The Flame of Hope symbolizes the spirit and potential of Special Olympics athletes, representing inclusion and community. The Law Enforcement Torch Run plays a crucial role in this tradition, with officers acting as "Guardians of the Flame" in a relay that concludes with the lighting of the cauldron at the Games' opening ceremonies.
