Five North Carolina teachers have been recognized with the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, an honor given by the federal government to outstanding K-12 educators in these subjects. The awards were announced by former President Joe Biden, acknowledging 336 teachers across the nation for their contributions from 2021 to 2023.
The honored educators from North Carolina are Chasity Bolch of Newton-Conover Middle School, Adam Haas of Rocky River Elementary School, Nardi Routten of Creekside Elementary School, Sara-Elizabeth Senseney of Mountain Heritage High School, and Leigha Jordan of Valley Springs Middle School.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice “Mo” Green expressed pride in the awardees: “The work these exceptional educators do not only shapes students and families, but our communities, our state and our nation. I am so proud to see them receive this distinction at the national level for all that they do to contribute to the excellence of North Carolina’s Public Schools.”
Established in 1983, the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) alternate annually between recognizing kindergarten through sixth grade and seventh through 12th grade teachers. Nominees undergo a comprehensive application process showcasing their expertise and adaptability to various learners and environments. Their applications are reviewed by a panel comprising distinguished mathematicians, scientists, and educators who recommend candidates to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
