In support of our commitment to healthy urban forests and clean waterways, Cary will be performing an environmental project along the Higgins Greenway Trail from September 11 through the spring of 2024. The project will include removing non-native invasive plants in order to support the best health of the existing native forests that surround the greenway trail. The work will be performed in stages so that portions of the greenway trail will remain open for the duration of the project. This fall we are giving away 1,000 trees to Cary residents to add to their landscape and our community’s canopy! To be more fair and equitable, we will utilize a lottery system this fall. The lottery will open at noon on Tuesday, September 26 and close at noon on Sunday, October 1. There's no need to rush to complete the lottery form right when the lottery opens; as long as you submit the form by noon on October 1, you'll have the same chance as others to receive a tree. You will be able to rank the trees in order of preference, so go check out the descriptions of available trees to make your list of which ones will work in your yard. A contractor will be addressing drainage issues along the greenway near Ed Yerha Park requiring intermittent closures on either side of Jenks Carpenter Road. Work is scheduled to start the week of September 5 and will take approximately one week to complete. The greenway will remain open on evenings and weekends when work is occurring.

The Sprayground at Jack Smith Park will be closed for maintenance on September 11. The playground, dog park, and picnic shelter will remain open. Following the maintenance, the sprayground will return to normal operating hours. Please check the Jack Smith sprayground status for updates carync.gov/sprayground.

Children can also get their very own Farmers Market Passport and participate in the Eat-A-Rainbow program, which encourages children to eat healthy, nutritious foods.
