In response to popular demand, Wegmans grocery enterprises will continue to expand throughout North Carolina in 2021 and beyond.
The New York-based grocery company first opened in North Carolina in 2019, marking its 100th location in Raleigh, reported the Winsight Grocery Business in September. The store's opening had a strong reception, drawing 30,000 customers on the first day alone. Wegmans second North Carolina location opened this past summer in West Cary, just outside of Raleigh.
"When we visited the Raleigh-Durham area, we quickly saw that the area had everything we were looking for," Wegmans senior vice president of real estate and development Ralph Uttaro said, the Winsight Grocery Business reported. The grocer has decided upon six new locations to open stores in the coming years, with the soonest to be opening in the spring of 2021 in Chapel Hill and Wake Forest.
Wegmans will not be alone in these expansion efforts in the state- other stores, including Aldi, Lidl, and Trader Joe's, have also sought to increase their presence in metropolitan areas such as Charlotte and Greensboro, Winsight Grocery Business reported.
