The latest Wake County budget proposal would cut more than 100 employees, Manager David Ellis said, as a way for the government to address nearly a $30 million gap heading into the next spending cycle.
“To bridge that gap, I recommend eliminating more than 100 positions across the county, delaying capital investments, and cutting back on contractual services and professional development for our employees,” Ellis said, CBS 17 reported on May 18.
The proposal would mean a 1% decrease from the total 2020 budget.
Wake County officials predict that COVID-19 will affect critical revenue streams such as property tax. According to CBS 17, the coronavirus crisis is causing slower growth in vehicle sales and other key markets. Officials also preclude that a 14% decline in new permit applications will occur. The decline will end in a $4.5 million reduction in revenue that would be needed to rekindle the economy.
Officials also predict a steep drop in sales revenue of almost 22% will commence, which would mean about a $42 million decline in sales tax revenue, CBS 17 reported.
