Heart failure is a condition where the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s needs. Early symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath can worsen over time. Dr. Mentz explains, “The term ‘heart failure’ itself can be really overwhelming,” adding that the Duke team provides care aligned with patient goals, from symptom relief to long-term management.

Advanced heart failure specialists are cardiologists with additional training in managing heart failure. They use tests like cardiopulmonary exercise testing, cardiac MRI, and diagnostic catheterizations to understand the causes of heart failure and work on treatment plans. The Duke team also focuses on medication plans that consider patient goals, lifestyle, and cost. Dr. Mentz notes, “The vast majority of patients living with heart failure respond very well to medication,” but they also have contingency plans for advanced treatments if needed.

Dr. Mentz advises seeing a heart failure specialist soon after diagnosis to set expectations and develop a treatment roadmap. Even those who have lived with heart failure for some time can benefit from a specialist’s evaluation if they notice worsening symptoms or other specific conditions.

Duke’s heart failure specialists collaborate with other medical team members to optimize care. They offer virtual visits when possible and work with local providers for shared care arrangements. Dr. Mentz emphasizes their role as an added support layer: “Think of us as an added layer of support that can work with your other doctors,” he said.
