The North Carolina Courage has announced the appointment of Katelyn Rowland as an assistant goalkeeping coach. Rowland, who retired from professional soccer in February, joins Nathan Thackeray’s coaching staff after an illustrious eight-season career in the NWSL, six of which were with the Courage.

During her time with the Courage, Rowland played 50 matches and was instrumental in securing several titles for the team. Her contributions include three NWSL Shields, two NWSL Championships, consecutive Challenge Cup titles in 2022 and 2023, and the 2018 International Champions Cup. She also won NWSL Championships with FC Kansas City in 2015 and with the Western New York Flash in 2016.

Rowland will now help guide a goalkeeper group that includes Casey Murphy, Marisa Bova, and Hensley Hancuff. Additionally, she will join the NCFC Youth goalkeeping coaching staff alongside her new role with the Courage.

Rowland expressed enthusiasm about her new position: “It’s an honor to return here. While my role looks a lot different this time around, it’s something that really excites me... I feel very fortunate to start my coaching career in such an environment. Though I’m on the other side of the line now, my goal remains the same. Go Courage.”

Nathan Thackeray welcomed Rowland back to the team: “I’m delighted to welcome Katelyn back to Courage Country as she starts her pathway as a professional coach... She’s going to make a wonderful coach, and I’m excited to watch her development but even more excited that she gets to start this journey with us.”

Stephen Palmer of NCFC Youth also expressed excitement about Rowland's return: “We are thrilled to welcome Katelyn back to the NCFC Youth Goalkeeper Program and our staff... We are excited to welcome her back and look forward to the positive impact she’ll bring to our program and our goalkeepers once again.”

Rowland had a distinguished collegiate career at UCLA before being drafted by Kansas City. She spent most of her professional career with North Carolina until Bay FC selected her in the 2024 NWSL Expansion Draft.

As preparations continue for their upcoming season opener against Racing Louisville on March 15, Rowland's experience is expected to be a valuable asset for both players and coaches alike.
