The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has announced a $25 million initiative, supported by the Golden LEAF Foundation, to enhance school performance through innovative educational strategies. This initiative was revealed at the State Board of Education meeting, with plans for the board to vote on two contracts and a Request for Proposals (RFP) later this week.
Named the Golden LEAF Schools Initiative, this five-year program focuses on improving various aspects of education including school culture, teaching methods, leadership skills, math instruction, and career readiness.
State Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green emphasized the importance of this initiative in achieving educational excellence across North Carolina's public schools. He stated: “The Golden LEAF Schools Initiative is an important step toward achieving my vision: ensuring every child in North Carolina’s public schools achieves educational excellence.”
Green also acknowledged former Superintendent Catherine Truitt's significant role in developing this initiative alongside the Golden LEAF Foundation. He praised her dedication and commitment to enhancing educational outcomes for students.
Scott Hamilton, President of the Golden LEAF Foundation, expressed gratitude for both Green and Truitt's leadership in making this initiative possible. Hamilton said: “Golden LEAF Schools represents our commitment to long-term economic advancement through developing the workforce for the future.”
The foundation of this initiative lies in Marzano’s High Reliability Schools (HRS) model. It includes providing intensive coaching and resources such as math support and career readiness materials. Participating schools will receive funding for travel, stipends, and bonuses as part of their involvement.
Twenty middle schools located in rural counties with persistent Tier 1 or Tier 2 economic status will participate in two cohorts under this program. Low-performing schools will join the Transformative Schools Cohort (TSC), while others will be part of the Personalized Competency-Based Education Cohort (PCBE).
Eric Davis, chairman of the State Board of Education, highlighted how initiatives like these align with their goal to provide every child with academic success opportunities. Ralph Strayhorn from the Golden LEAF Foundation Board echoed similar sentiments regarding its alignment with their mission to increase economic opportunity.
Applications for participation open on January 13th and close on March 21st at 5:00 PM. More information can be found via the RFP documents provided by NCDPI.
