The North Carolina Courage has announced the decision to waive defenders Julia Dorsey and Landy Mertz. This announcement comes just before the full end-of-season roster decisions are set to be disclosed on Tuesday.
Both Dorsey and Mertz were 2024 draft picks who made their professional debuts during their rookie seasons. Mertz debuted with North Carolina, while Dorsey was on loan with Dallas Trinity FC of the USL Super League.
Dorsey, a third-round pick from the University of North Carolina, was known for being a two-sport athlete. She missed her senior soccer season due to an injury sustained while playing lacrosse in the previous spring. Loaned to Dallas Trinity FC in August, she played regularly during the fall portion of their inaugural season.
Mertz was selected in the fourth round from Pittsburgh, where she earned recognition as a two-time All-ACC performer. Her professional debut came on May 24 when she substituted in the 84th minute against Houston Dash during regular season play. On July 31, she scored her first professional goal against Monterrey in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup group stage, aiding the Courage's progression to the semifinals.
With these waivers, following the start of the end-of-season waiver wire, North Carolina Courage will have 23 active players on its roster along with one player loaned out and another listed as injured.
