A pair of unidentified women pose next to an airplane in this early 20th century photograph from the North Carolina Transportation Museum’s Permanent Collection. While we do not know who these two women are, we do know that there were numerous female aviation pioneers from North Carolina, from Tiny Broadwick’s jumps out of airplanes and Viola Gent ry’s record setting distance flights, Virginia Lane who fought for equality as a stewardess and Cheryl Peters, the first female pilot for North Carolina’s Piedmont Airlines, there are plenty of aviatrixes to be proud of from the Tar Heel State!
