Career and Technical Education Courses

Building a strong brand with the confidence to back it is more important than ever in pursuing career opportunities.

That's why 740 ninth- and 10th-graders enrolled in Career and Technical Education courses gathered at N.C. State University for the Career Xploration event on Oct. 21.

The event's purpose was to provide students the opportunity to obtain emerging and non-traditional career information, learn team-building and leadership skills, learn the importance of and practice networking, and gain an understanding of wellness and coping skills.

There were four sessions led by 67 volunteer business and industry partners and military reps, through which all students rotated:

Guess My Gig? - Students engaged in a game-show-like format where business/ industry professionals and student volunteers play a guessing game. Games included guessing the Career Cluster and Occupational Title of the business/industry professional represented.  Business/Industry volunteers shared their career with the students after a period of guessing time.  They described their career, the post-secondary education required, likes/dislikes, advice, and other important career information.

The Leader in You - Students gained hands-on leadership and team-building experiences to successfully promote and achieve common goals. This was accomplished by students rotating to three different stations while interacting with community professionals.

Living the Best You! - Students focused on wellness and coping skills necessary for career and personal success.

Networking 101 - Getting Connected - This session explored the importance of making a lot of initial connections that could turn into a mutually-beneficial professional relationship.

This was the first Career Xploration held since 2019, due to the pandemic, but it has become an annual event for WCPSS high school students over approximately the last 15 years.
