Meredith College will hold the 2022 Honoring Women Veterans event on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. in Jones Chapel. The event honors all veterans, with special emphasis on the contributions of women veterans.
The featured speaker for this year’s event will be Lieutenant General Kathleen M. Gainey, U.S. Army (Retired). Gainey will present about the Military Women’s Memorial (MWM), formerly known as the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Located in Arlington, Va., the memorial is commemorating its 25th anniversary in October. Gainey serves as an MWM North Carolina ambassador.
The annual event is presented by the Meredith College Honoring Women Veterans Committee, with assistance from Meredith Student Veterans Association and Service Scholars.
“Our event honors all veterans, but especially women veterans since we are a women’s college. The past couple of years we have had a wonderful video presentation via our Marketing Office,” said Facilities Services Customer Service Clerk Patty Blackwell, committee co-chair. “This year we are returning to Jones Chapel for an in-person event with a guest speaker, color guard, drill team, and musical performance.”
The Honoring Women Veterans event is free and open to the public.
In addition to the November 9 event, Meredith will commemorate Veterans Day with special displays in the lobby of Carlyle Campbell Library during the week, and in the front foyer of the chapel on the day of the event.
The campus community will have an opportunity to create holiday cards that will be sent to the troops via Heartillery. A table will be set up in Cate Student Center with card-making supplies and a drop-off box.
