As hurricane season begins, join us on Wednesday, June 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. for the formal opening of Alluvial Decoder — an immersive, educational installation on the Raleigh Greenway at Crabtree Creek. Lincoln Hancock, William Dodge, and William Belcher (A Gang of Three) will be present to talk about the system of flood markers, the reinstituted wildflower meadow, and the experiential graphic elements that comprise the project. Check on the progress of wildflowers planted last fall, learn about stormwater operations and floodplain stewardship, and imagine the heights of storms like Fran and Floyd as well as sudden unnamed flooding events that regularly occur along Crabtree Creek.
Staff from the City of Raleigh Stormwater Management Division will be on hand to discuss the risks associated with flooding in urban environments and the benefits of good floodplain management. The City will also discuss its new Flood Early Warning System and how it is used during significant storms to help keep our community safe.
Alluvial Decoder is located on the greenway near the intersection of Crabtree Valley Ave. and Blue Ridge Rd. Please feel free to bike or walk to (and through!) the installation. Parking is limited.
