Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy freshmen and sophomores have been learning about service and leadership. A key part of this is developing service project proposals to be presented and selected for funding from the WCPSS Office of Magnet and Curriculum Enhancement Programs.
Students began with a brainstorming process focused on the importance of service and ways in which they could make an impact on their school community through service. Students worked collaboratively on project proposals. Most of the following projects were implemented on May 6.
• Car Wash Service Project: To support the school’s PTSA, with all proceeds going to art supplies.
• School Garden Service Project: Students planted flowers on school grounds. They determined the locations most in need of beautification and coordinated with 811 to ensure safe digging.
• Hydration Awareness Service Project: This group wanted to make sure every student was aware of the importance of hydration and had access to environmentally friendly ways to stay hydrated. They used their funding to purchase reusable water bottles and labels to give to students who need them in their school community next year.
• Fitness Education Service Project: This group collaborated with the Beta club to purchase a pickleball net for the school.
They acquired foam rollers and ice packs to teach middle school students about the importance of post-exercise stretching and physical recovery strategies.
• School Clean-Up Service Project: This group cleaned up in and around the WYMLA campus. They used funds to purchase trash grabbers, bags, and Gatorade to stay hydrated while making sure the grounds looked their best.
The instructional materials used for the service projects were designed by community
