Town of Cary issued the following announcement on January 4.

On the evening of Monday, January 3, 2022, Cary responded to a 2,600-gallon sewer spill near Linton Banks Place.

The spill is the result of flash flooding and high stream flow in Black Creek and a ductile iron sewer pipeline separation.

Town staff has installed a bypass pump to stop the sewer spillage until pipeline repairs can be completed.

CARY, NC – A sewer spill in Cary occurred the evening of January 3, 2022 near the 200 block of Linton Banks Place. Town staff responded to the alert that came in around 4 p.m., and stopped the spill at 6:40 p.m. The overall spill volume was 2,600 gallons, which flowed into Black Creek. No fish kill was observed.

The spill was caused by a severe storm and heavy rainfall moving through the area throughout much of Monday. Flash flooding and high stream flow caused an eight-inch ductile iron pipe that crosses the stream to separate leading to the spill. Cary staff installed a bypass pump to reroute sewer flow around the separation until the pipeline is repaired.

As required by law, additional notification has been made to the State Department of Environmental Quality, who will review the incident. North Carolina General Statutes require public notice in the form of a news release issued by wastewater utility operators within 24 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters. Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills of 15,000 gallons or greater.
