COVID-19 changed the way many students graduated this year, and for nearly 30 students in the Wake Tech dental assisting program, the same new normal applied.
Traditionally, the graduating dental assisting class gets a lunch, but this year for the 29 students — the largest in the program's history — it was a socially distanced ceremony and lunch was boxed for takeout with a cupcake.
The students were honored with an awards night at the Perry Health Science Campus on July 31, the college said in a news release about the graduation ceremony.
“These students are troopers,” department head Trudy Clark said in the news release. “They had to convert to an online lecture format and simulated clinic hours to complete spring semester courses. When they returned to clinical rotations in June they were ready. The students have extensive infection control training and knowledge on how to utilize personal protective equipment correctly.”
