Fourteen athletes from Special Olympics North Carolina took part in the 2025 Special Olympics North America Softball Championship, held at Devon Park in Oklahoma City from September 19 to 21. The event brought together more than 300 athletes and Unified partners from 12 Special Olympics Programs across the United States.
Representing Surry County, the North Carolina team included Sam Chamberlain, Joy Coffman, Lucas Coffman, Joshua Davis, Austin Dutton, Calvin Dutton, Levi Earley, John Edwards, Lolita Evans, Michael Felts, Colton Galyean, Peyton Kane, Curtis Ledford and Austin Renegar. The Surry County Yellow Jackets earned a fourth place ribbon in their division.

Special Olympics North Carolina has worked since 1968 to use sports as a way to improve the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization serves nearly 53,000 athletes and Unified partners statewide. SONC provides year-round training and competition in 20 Olympic-type sports on both local and state levels. It also runs health initiatives aimed at improving access to community health resources for people with intellectual disabilities. Through its Unified Champion Schools program, SONC encourages youth with and without intellectual disabilities to create inclusive environments and become leaders in their communities.
