Michelle Lord has been appointed as the new local program co-coordinator for Special Olympics Mitchell County, effective immediately. The announcement was made by Keith L. Fishburne, the President and CEO of Special Olympics North Carolina.
Throughout her teaching career, Lord has been an advocate for Special Olympics, participating in state-level competitions with Special Olympics Mitchell County. In her new role, she will assist in implementing Special Olympics activities within the county. This includes leading a volunteer committee that organizes sports training and competitions along with health and wellness initiatives for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Her responsibilities also involve recruiting and training volunteers, increasing athlete participation, and raising funds to support the program.

Special Olympics North Carolina, founded in 1968, leverages the power of sports to enhance the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization serves nearly 45,000 athletes and Unified partners in North Carolina, inspiring a network of thousands involved in Special Olympics programs across the state.
