Sensory bags containing tactile and visual items are now available at various Town of Holly Springs facilities. This initiative is part of the Town’s Accessible & Inclusive Recreation Program, aiming to help individuals regulate emotions and reduce anxiety.
The sensory bags include headphones, sunglasses, activity cards, fidget objects, and communication aids developed with A Voice for All Foundation. “The bags and items inside can offer discreet and effective tools for self-soothing,” said Robert Sears, the Town’s program specialist who led the initiative. “The items can help both children and adults better participate in environments they might find overwhelming.”
These bags are free to borrow from several locations including the Holly Springs Town Hall Council Chambers, Hunt Center, Bass Lake, Cultural Center, and Ting Stadium. Visitors can borrow entire bags or select items during activities or meetings. Items are cleaned between uses.
Additionally, Holly Springs provides American Sign Language and language interpretation services for meetings at the Town Hall and other interactions with the Town. For Town Council meetings, contacting the Town Clerk’s office 48 hours in advance ensures service availability.
The Accessible & Inclusive Recreation Program also offers recreational, social, and educational activities such as music therapy and yoga. “Our culture in Holly Springs is one of inclusion,” Sears said. “We hope the sensory items bring comfort, focus, and calm vibes to visitors of all ages at Town programs and events.”
