Residents of Fuquay-Varina are being reminded that pumpkins cannot be collected as “yard debris” and should be disposed of using alternative methods.

The Town recommends composting pumpkins, as they can be a beneficial addition to home compost systems. For those who do not compost at home, pumpkins can be dropped off at a Wake County Convenience Center compost site. Before composting, residents are advised to remove any candle wax, paint, or glitter from the pumpkins. More information about food scraps composting and drop-off locations is available on the Wake County website: https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/waste-recycling/outreach-and-education/community-programs/food-scraps-composting.

Another option is to donate pumpkins to local organizations that may reuse them as livestock feed. Residents are encouraged to check with nearby farms and wildlife preserves for donation opportunities.

If neither composting nor donation is possible, the Town asks that residents bag their pumpkins before placing them in garbage bins. Pumpkins that have been soaked in bleach or other chemicals should also be bagged and disposed of with regular trash.
