The Town of Cary announced on May 4 that Phase 2 of the Black Creek Greenway, which runs from Livingstone Drive to Weston Parkway, is now open to the public. The reopening restores access to a key recreational corridor and includes the debut of a new pedestrian bridge at Cary Parkway.
The project is significant for local residents who use the greenway for walking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. The improvements aim to enhance safety and connectivity in one of Cary’s most popular green spaces.
According to the Town of Cary, the newly completed section features a 650-foot sidewalk connection and a 285-foot pedestrian bridge where no crossing previously existed. The weathered steel structure rises about 50 feet above Black Creek and weighs over 400,000 pounds, making it the tallest pedestrian bridge in Cary. Integrated lighting has been added to improve visibility and allow safe access during evening hours.
Design elements inspired by the surrounding tree canopy are incorporated into large leaf-patterned panels on the bridge, creating changing visual effects throughout the day as natural light interacts with them. In addition to these enhancements, a new traffic signal with pedestrian push buttons has been installed at Cary Parkway and Norwell Boulevard for increased safety.
With Phase 2 now open, work will begin immediately on Phase 3 renovations from Weston Parkway to Old Reedy Creek Trailhead. This section will be closed starting today with plans for reopening this winter.
The ongoing renovations are part of continued efforts by Cary officials to invest in accessible outdoor spaces that serve both current residents and future growth.
