Amber Henry has been appointed as the local program co-coordinator for Special Olympics McDowell County, effective immediately. This was announced by Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) President/CEO, Keith L. Fishburne.
In her role, Henry will collaborate with a volunteer committee to implement Special Olympics activities within McDowell County. Her responsibilities include leading sports training and competition opportunities, as well as health and wellness initiatives targeted at children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Henry is tasked with recruiting, training, and managing volunteers, increasing athlete participation, and raising funds for the program.
“Henry works as a special education teacher and has worked with inclusive programs at Western Carolina University and Disability Partners,” noted Fishburne. She has previously supported the local program’s Spring Games and Unified sports efforts.

Special Olympics North Carolina has been active since 1968, harnessing sports to enrich the lives of those with intellectual disabilities. The organization engages nearly 45,000 athletes and Unified partners across the state.
SONC offers training and competitions in 20 Olympic-style sports at both local and state levels. It conducts health and wellness activities to enhance the health of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The organization also runs Unified Champion Schools, a program fostering inclusivity among youth with and without intellectual disabilities, empowering them to become leaders and change agents in their communities.
